After rocking the World Series, the Cubs aren’t only floating on the high of winning for the first time in over 100 years. The Chicago team is taking floating to the next level by installing their own float tanks at its new training facility. And the Cubs aren’t the only sports team to do so; the Dodgers, New England Patriots, Houston Texans, Ohio State University and the Seattle Seahawks have also recently installed their own tanks. Pro athletes and fitness celebs including Steph Curry, JJ Watt, Keith Rivers, Russell Wilson and Olympian Ali Raisin have also taken to floating as a recovery mechanism, marking what is becoming the next big sports recovery craze.

Here are two main reasons why pro-sports teams, athletes and fitness buffs are stepping into liquid.

Floating is the ultimate recovery potion.

The benefits of epsom salts for muscle recovery, alleviation of aches and pains, and the reduction of inflammation are well-documented. In a float tank, almost 1000 pounds of epsom salts are dissolved into a couple hundred gallons of water making it a rich environment for athletes to accelerate total body recovery. From lactic acid buildup to injured and sore muscles, epsom salt baths help elite athletes reach peak performance by speeding up the recovery process from days to hours.

Relaxation and Concentration.

What’s more intense than standing in a stadium with hundreds of thousands of fans counting on a team’s performance for happiness, cheering and booing along the way?! Sure, being relaxed may seem like the opposite of what an athlete wants to do in order to achieve peak performance, but science has shown that relaxation can increase stamina, speed, strength, and coordination. Mental calmness and mindfulness, which are both core benefits to floating, also leads to less anxiety, greater confidence, and clarity. Many individuals who float also experience vivid visualizations, which when practiced mindfully can help increase focus and concentration on one’s goals. Performance athletes have used visualization to prepare for game day and to mentally whomp the competition.

ESPN recently featured pro basketballl player Steph Curry talking floatation and why he’s sold on getting in the tank to up his game.

Whether mental or physical gains are the goal, floating is fast becoming the newest fitness fad for all-star athletes and pro-sports teams.
